Tribes Bring Awareness to Environmental Risks on Reservations

Tribes say oil production is causing environmental risks on reservations in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana.

A two-day conference is being held in Bismarck to shed light on these risks.

Dr. Barbara Schmitt, UTTC Economic Development Director says it's not just affecting wildlife but the people living on reservations.

She says tribal members have some of the highest rates of environmentally-related health problems.

These health issues range from respiratory problems to cancer.

The whole state has to be aware of our culture that we have on our reservations and that we see Mother Earth as the wherewithall. I mean that is everything to us and that we need to make sure that we take care of Mother Earth," says Dr. Barbara Schmitt, Economic Development Director, UTTC.

Schmitt says when talking about Western North Dakota and oil development, sometimes the tribes are left out.

UTTC hopes to bring awareness and partner with the state to work on protecting the environment.
