Preliminary test results have come in following a pipeline spill that occurred on April 11 near Medora.
The company owning the pipeline and the Health Department took samples from the site determining how much chloride was dispersed into the water from the spill.
The spill occurred in rugged Badlands terrain which is hindering clean-up efforts.
State environmental geologist Kris Roberts says they will come up with a response plan once the final test results come in.
"Sometimes, and this may be one of those times, where trying to do some kind of remediation, some kind of a clean-up, would actually cause more problems to the environment than just leaving it be and letting Mother Nature take care of it," Roberts said.
Roberts says the salt brine has been diluted by the water flowing through Merrifield Creek.
He wants to stress though that dilution is not a solution to pollution but sometimes it's the best they can do.
