One Billion Barrels Produced from the Bakken

Posted: Updated:

Oil production in the Bakken reaches a huge milestone, one that puts North Dakota in the history books.

The Bakken formation has officially produced 1 billion barrels of oil, more than two-thirds of that comes from western North Dakota.

That's only 10% of what the state is capable of producing.

Drilling is predicted to continue in the Bakken for the next 2 decades, with wells expected to produce oil for the next 45 years.

"It really does put North Dakota in a very exclusive club. There's about 65,000 oil fields in the world and this puts North Dakota in about the top 125, but it also puts North Dakota in the top 15% in oil fields in the U.S."  says Alison Ritter, Public Information Officer for the Department of Mineral Resources.

Experts predict North Dakota will produce one million barrels of oil per day in May.
