Caller Impersonates Deputy in Latest Phone Scam

Posted: Updated:

The Burleigh County Sheriff's Department warns of a phone scam involving a man falsely claiming to be a deputy and threatening potential victims to send a money order to avoid arrest.

The Director of the North Dakota Consumer Protection tells residents to be cautious when answering the phone from any number you don't recognize.

Parrell Grossman says the department typically sees 15 to 20 scams of this nature per year.

While he says it's very difficult to catch these crooks because they may be calling from another state or using someone else's number-- he says to be on the defensive if you get this kind of call.

"Our law enforcement officers never threaten individuals. They simply would never call you and tell you if you dont pay this fine you're going to be arrested. If you actually owed a fine there would be some court documents some documentation of that obligation," say Parrell Grossman, Consumer Protection Division.

There's another scam going around.

Grossman says the department has received hundreds of complaints in the past few days from those who have gotten calls from impersonators saying they're with Visa or Mastercard and asking for personal information over the phone.

If you receive a questionable phone call, hang up and contact the consumer protection division at 1-800-472-2600.
