Man Hole Rescue

Posted: Updated:

"There was a lot of training in action today."

That was according to Minot Fire Department Battalion Chief John Krill after a successful emergency rescue of a city worker who fell down a man hole.

Krill says the Minot Water Department was retrieving equipment at the intersection of 14th Avenue and 1st Street Southwest.

An upper rung in the man hole broke as a worker was descending which caused him to fall about seven feet.

Rescue was called on scene for a possible broken leg.

Krill says the equipment used was specific to 'confined space rescue,' which consists of a tripod, a 4 to 1 system of pulleys and one rescue person in a harness monitoring the air in the man hole.

(John Krill, Battalion Chief Minot Fire Department) "Fifteen years ago we started getting better at it. We were prepared and it worked today. We've trained for this over the years. It's quite possibly a once in a life time rescue. It's one of those things that happens very infrequently but we were prepared for the situation."

Krill says there are 15 firefighters on each shift in Minot - 11 were on scene at the rescue while one team remained on call near the airport.
