GULFPORT, Fla., May 5, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Stetson University College of Law has added a new summer course for law students on sea turtle protection.

Topics in Biodiversity Law: Sea Turtles is offered at Stetson May 27-June 6 for law students interested in learning about the threats to endangered sea turtles and the legal and policy framework to protect them.

Students enrolled in the course join sea turtle experts from Latin America and the Caribbean on Stetson Law's Gulfport campus during the Consultative Committee Meeting of the Inter-American Convention for the Protection and Conservation of Sea Turtles.

The Inter-American Convention (IAC) is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the legal framework for countries in the Americas and the Caribbean to take actions for the benefit of sea turtles.

"This course at Stetson provides students with a unique opportunity to learn about domestic and international efforts to protect sea turtles and become part of a critical conservation dialogue," said Professor Royal Gardner, the director of Stetson's Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy. Professor Gardner and Jacklyn Lopez of the Center for Biological Diversity will co-teach the new course.

Stetson Law is situated near Tampa Bay, the largest open-water estuary in Florida. Loggerheads, green turtles and leatherbacks nest along the coastline.

Sea turtles living in U.S. waters are threatened by the destruction of their nesting and foraging habitats and being captured in commercial and recreational fisheries, entangled in marine debris, and struck by boats. Six sea turtle species are protected under the IAC and many live in Florida.

The course is filling rapidly. Spots remain open in the one-credit section only. Law students interested in more information about Stetson's new summer course on sea turtles should visit www.stetson.edu/turtles.
