What the Climate Report Shows for ND

Posted: Updated:

Climate change is a national topic as a new government climate report was released on Tuesday.

The National Climate Assessment shows temperatures are rising across the country.

So what does this mean for North Dakota?

Dr. Adnan Akyuz, North Dakota State Climatologist says North Dakota falls in the great plains part of the national assessment.

It encompasses eight states from here to Texas.

He says our state has seen the steepest increase in temperature in the country since 1890.

Today, we are 2.7 degrees warmer than 100 years ago.

Although it may seem like warm weather has not been very common recently, Akyuz says this doesn't change the long term trend.

He says the US climate has changed in the past, is changing today, and can guarantee it will change in the future.

He predicts the warming trend will continue and it is going to take a tremendous amount of force to turn this in the opposite direction.
