It's rough. It's tough and it's played right here in the Magic City.
The roller derby season is underway, and the players-- they might surprise you.
Bonnie Campo talks to the NoDak Knockouts to discover who the girls are behind the spandex.
Chances are you think you know something about Roller Derby just by its name,
but what if I told the game was changing?
(Sarakuda, Minot Roller Derby) "Be very open minded. It's not old-school roller derby. There is not a lot of fish nets, and short skirts and bad attitudes. It's really about the athleticism of the skaters, and them coming out and giving their heart and soul on the track."
She said the revival of Roller Derby came in the early 2000's. One of the Knockouts, Kyra-acolypse, says there isn't a text-book skater anymore, everyone's different.
(Kyra Brookins, Skater) "I work full-time as an exercise physiologist for Trinity Health, but then outside of that I am involved in fishing, outdoor activities, I mean you name it I am trying to be involved with it."
She said she's not the only one with a quote unquote normal life.
(Kyra Brookins, Skater) "Multiple women on our team are both parents, mothers, wives, I mean we are all here doing this together, supporting ourselves both on and off the track because we are a derby family and a derby team at the same time. We love being out there, and being strong tough women, and showing off our fefemininityShowing off we are out there playing a sport, but we are doing it with our own style and flare."
That flare consists of neon knee-pads, and satirically-violent names. Once you make it past that, it's fun for the whole family.
(Sarakuda, Minot Roller Derby) "Roller Derby is a family oriented sport. We are all about mom's, dad's, grandma's, grandpa's. We have all the things to make a the whole family happy, and it's really about coming together and participating in a grass roots sport for a genuine good time."
If you are thinking about going to a match Sarakuda has some advice for you.
(Sarakuda, Minot Roller Derby) "When you're a first time fan, come out, be ready to see all of the hits, and all of falls, and the jumps, and the screams, and sometimes the tears, and sometimes the blood, but it's all in good fun."
Through all of that your bound to make some new friends while at the game. So whether you're are big, little, short or tall the Nodak Knockouts would like to invite you all. In Minot, Bonnie Campo KX News.
The Knockouts won that game, beating Aberdeen 180-120.
