Area Fire Departments Train for Rope Rescues

Posted: Updated:

Fire Departments from around the region are coming together with a mine in Beulah to train with ropes this afternoon.

The Bismarck, Minot, and Grand Forks Fire Departments as well as the Dakota Westmoreland Mine are learning how to conduct rope rescues from the Safety Services Company out of Texas.

They've been working on all of the basics like properly putting on a harness and connecting ropes to anchors.

Today they are also using each other as dummies and descending from high places or into confined areas.

"There's not a whole lot of people that have these expertise. It's one of those things that's very, very training rich. You have to train a lot, train a lot, train a lot and fortunately you don't have to do it very often but when the time does come to use it, you better be really good at it," Owner of Safety Services Dave Medick said.

The group is taking their training up a notch tomorrow.

They will have mock scenarios and victims they need to rescue.
