Family Owned Business Makes Trucks Look Brand New

Posted: Updated:

Truck traffic rules the roads in western North Dakota.

Many truck drivers are doing their job in or around the Bakken but even the biggest of big rigs needs a little TLC.

Steph Scheurer and photojournalist Tom Palanuk take us to Dickinson where one family owned business is making semis look brand new.

Joel Schrum has been washing trucks since he was nine years old.

His dad started Badlands Truck Wash in 1991, the first truck wash in Dickinson.

"And then I took over in 98. He ran it until he went driving truck and then I took it over and made it portable," says Joel Schrum, Owner, Badlands Truck Wash.

As you can imagine... business is booming...

Joel and his wife Leslie are swamped-- cleaning up the city-- one truck at a time.

Surprisingly though, he says their business is 90 percent local customers.

"It's grown and it's gotten crazy. Scheduling it and trying to keep everybody on a constant, you know, schedule is the biggest thing because we have just so many clients," says Leslie, Owner, Badlands Truck Wash.

Joel washes every truck by hand and it typically takes about two hours to get one of these big rigs clean as a whistle.

"In a day, my goal is to get four full units by myself, which is what you see here," says Joel.

During the winter months Joel actually drives truck and runs his washing business in the Spring and Summer.

"Yay truck washing season," says Leslie.

Both Joel and Leslie look forward to warm weather because they get to spend time together as a family.

"We can come out and bring him lunch or you know, have a little picnic, take a break and just spend some family time together," says Leslie.

Even their kids like to help.

"During the summer they're with us all the time. They come out, and they're out, I have my little girl, she'll scrub, she'll rinse, they love doing it," says Joel.

"Do you like helping your dad wash trucks?" (nods)

Two year old Kyron is already a pro.

This family plans to keep on trucking in this business for many more years to come.

"As long as the business is coming, I'll still be here," says Joel.

Leslie says since Joel grew up in the trucking business and drives truck himself, he knows what the owners and operators expect when they get their equipment clean.

Badlands Truck Wash also uses all biodegradable products.
