Write-In Candidate for Minot Mayor

Posted: Updated:

While Chuck Barney is the only name on the ballot for Minot mayor, Kevin Mehrer hopes his name ends up on lots of ballots too.

Mehrer has decided to mount a write-in campaign for mayor.

He says he decided to run after seeing only one person became an official candidate.

He thinks the people of Minot deserve a choice.

(Kevin Mehrer, Write-In Candidate for Minot Mayor) "I'm a fresh face, haven't served on the city council...I think that plays to my advantage. I think I can bring a fresh view, a fresh vision to this community that in a time like this, as we look around I think our community is growing hand over foot."

Mehrer is 27 years old and a regional executive for the Boy Scouts of America.

He's a Minot native who says flood recovery and growth are critical areas to address for the city's future.

And he wants to get a handle on flood control.

(Kevin Mehrer, Write-In Candidate for Minot Mayor) "Flood control is a big one. We need to make sure we control the Mouse. I applaud the city for taking a step to control the homes that haven't been fixed, that's a critical step to just making our city look presentable. The next step is looking at the dams we have in place, looking at the dikes we have in place, making sure that those are ready so come springtime we don't have people concerned and looking at the river and wringing their hands."

Mehrer has a big job ahead of him if he hopes to be successful - voters will have to write in his name on a ballot that will contain only one printed name for mayor.

Still, he says he believes it's important to offer the choice.
