Runner Sets Big Goals on National Running Day

Posted: Updated:

It's National Running Day and it's a beautiful day to be out breaking a sweat.

For one fitness fanatic, everyday is running day, rain or shine.

Alicia Ewen reports.

Biking a few miles can be considered a solid workout for many people.

But for others, it's more like a warmup.

"When I go out I try to do at least six when I go out for a run any less than that and I feel I haven't done enough." says Michelle Montoya.

This is Michelle Montoya.

It's her job to help others achieve their fitness goals.

She's a personal trainer.

"I help people who are in their first race or want to run their fastest race."

Her latest client is someone with a very big goal.

Herself!

"I set a goal for myself this year to run 1400 miles in 2014 and I hit the 900 mark yesterday so today's kind of my celebration."

To put that in perspective, that's like running from Bismarck, North Dakota to Houston, Texas.

An incredible cross-country journey that had to start... small.

"I started running about four years ago on my own just because I thought it would be fun to start and I could barely do a mile"

She can now run up to 26 at a time.

And has advice for anyone else who wants to run...

Even if it's your first time.

"When you're first starting out just get out there and run. Doesn't matter how far, doesn't matter how fast, if you keep doing it you're going to get better at it and it will get easier."

Surprisingly Montoya only sprinted short distances in high school and never was on a cross country team or ran long distance until now.
