Burleigh and Morton County Community Discusses Proposed Joint Jail

Posted: Updated:

TRANSCRIPT

Burleigh and Morton County residents will decide in less than one week whether to help pay for a proposed joint detention center.

Voters will decide whether to approve or deny the joint jail during the June 10th election next Tuesday.

There were only around five people at the final public forum before the vote.

Residents of both counties will have the opportunity to vote 'yes' or 'no' to a temporary half-cent sales tax that would go toward funding the project.

The estimated cost of the project is about 70 million dollars.

Supporters

say the new center say it will reduce overcrowding and increase safety for jail staff.

Opponents say a sales tax makes for an expensive project.

Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert says if neither county passes the measure it's back to the drawing board.

"If it doesn't pass in either, than we have to reevaluate and probably come back and ask again in two years and ask the same question," says Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert.

Heinert says if the measure passes sales tax collections could begin as early as October 1st.

He says a recent projection shows the sales tax collection lasting for about 8 to 9 years.
