Senator Heidi Heitkamp says it's official: President Barack Obama will visit North Dakota.

Heitkamp says both the President and First Lady Michelle Obama will come to the Standing Rock Reservation on Friday, June 13th.

Heitkamp says the visit by the President will allow Native Americans to show their culture and history, and will help shine a light on the challenges many Native American families face.

President Obama says the reservation holds a special place in U.S. history because Chief Sitting Bill lived there.

Obama says he's worked to strengthen justice, infrastructure and health care for Native Americans. But he also laments high Indian poverty rates and says he wants to hear firsthand about their challenges. He'll announce new initiatives during the visit to grow Indian economies.

Representatives from Standing Rock say they were notified Thursday morning of the visit.
