Officials Break Ground in Watford City

Posted: Updated:

Local and state officials came together for a groundbreaking this morning to mark the beginning of new construction on a development in the steadily growing Watford City.

Emily Medalen has more on the story.

Now, in 2014, that number has more than tripled - to show about 6,500 people in the once-small city.

(Brent Sanford, Watford City Mayor) "It was very inadequate for serving the population that's here to work. And the long term population that will settle to work is similar to what we have now, and that's around 10,000 people. And so we have put together a plan to extend the boundaries of the city."

Multiple developments are going up around the city, and today was the groundbreaking for the most recent of these developments, called "The Crossings."

The Bakken Village is a 3 story mixed purpose building in The Crossings that will provide housing, office space, retail and more.

(Paul Dries, Chief Operating Officer, Bakken Development Solutions) "We see what we're doing as being the type of development that is needed in Watford City and North Dakota. We're coming in and we're doing it right and trying to make it something that everybody can be very proud of."

This 90 acre space will undergo construction for the next 10 months, and expectations are high for the finished product, which is located about 2 miles outside city limits.

(Paul Dries, Chief Operating Officer, Bakken Development Solutions) "The property will have just over 300 apartments, and then we also have ConocoPhillips is building their new regional headquarters on this sight, and we have Value Place Hotel, and hopefully a couple more hotels, and some more retail."

(Brent Sanford, Watford City Mayor) "It's very exciting. Basically, in a nutshell, to have ConocoPhillips putting their regional headquarters here is an "A" on our report card as a city, to have a company of that size and magnitude decide to put a regional headquarters in Watford City is quite a step forward for us."

So it looks like even with the extreme growth in this small area, western North Dakota is keeping up with the boom.

In Watford City, Emily Medalen, KX News.

Construction on The Crossings is expected to be complete in the spring of 2015.
