Tribal Elders Donate Land Back to Three Affiliated Tribal Members

Posted: Updated:

Members of the Three Affiliated Tribes are marking the land of their ancestors.

Thanks to Tribal Elders Reba and Tillie Walker, the Hidatsa, Mandan, and Arikara Tribes are able to return to their homeland for the first time in almost 200 years.

The Walkers are donating back to the Three Affiliated Tribes in the name of their father.

The tribes used to occupy portions of the Knife River before smallpox virtually wiped out their villages in the 11830's

Many cultural leaders were killed in the epidemic, but they now have a second chance to preserve their history for years to come.

A historical speaker says this place was intended for tribal members.

"This was the place. This is where we were. This is where we came from. This is where we are coming back to." says Amy Mossett, historical speaker.

Members of Three Affiliated say it is important for people to remember all three tribes for their unique and individual cultures.
