The 22nd annual Relay for Life is underway.. and hundreds of people are out to show their support.
Many people are gathered at Century High School for The Relay for Life all day today.
60 teams and 500 participants have already raised almost 240 thousand dollars for the American Cancer Society.
This afternoon, they set up over 4 thousand bags of candles around the track that are dedicated to those who have had to battle cancer.
Event organizers say that every year, the people from Bismarck/Mandan are always very excited to participate in the Relay for Life.
"I just think it's the community spirit here. You know they all get involved, they all like to come out, they all like to fight back and support their loved ones...it's neat to see," Event Organizer Lori Hoherz said.
The Keynote Speaker is Care Tuk, Author of Loose Screws and Skinned Knees..
She is a 12-time cancer survivor and has been battling it for over 40 years.
She is at the event to share her story, and to motivate other survivors with a few words of wisdom.
"You know I have some frontier words I call them. You only get one chance at life and nobody's guaranteed a tomorrow. You live one day at a time and you can choose to be in pain, or you can be a pain and a survivor is from day one from diagnosis, whether they have treatment or not, you're a survivor," Tuk said.
North Dakota's Relay for Life is number 1 in the great west region and number 9 in the nation according to size and the amount of money they raise.
