Computer Problems Slow Voting in Minot

Posted: Updated:

It's primary election day in North Dakota.

And while there are few races to attract voters' attention statewide, there are some local contests that will be decided today.

People in Williston and Minot will be selecting new mayors, and there are races for school board and park board in both cities.

In Minot, the voting got off to a rocky start because of some computer problems.

It seems people showing up as polls opened at 7-am were told they were either in the wrong polling location, or had already voted and were ineligible to cast a ballot.

It happened at all four polling locations in Minot - and became apparent when workers tried to look up prospective voters in the computerized poll books.

(Brenda Willoughby, MAYSA Poll Inspector) "Our poll books tell everybody that we are in the wrong precinct so we are writing everything out by hand, so it is working it's just a little slower than normal."

The four locations for voting in Minot are open and accepting voters - it might just take a few minutes longer than normal.

The good news is that turnout for a primary election is often much smaller than a general election - so the crowds should be pretty small.

In Williston, polls are also open until seven tonight and we'll have results tonight on KX News.
