Although the numbers aren't big, this year's Velva Post #39 legion baseball team will have plenty of experience returning. 13 players are out for this year's team but 8 of those are returning starters.
Add to that fact that the team will be mostly comprised of the high school team that finished 4th at state plus the addition of 3 19 year old players and the Niners are hoping to be in the thick of another title run.
Brett Engebretson, Niners Baseball Coach:The 13 can all play which is good and bad in that we can always use plenty but you got guys sitting on the bench that probably want to play a little more so we're hoping for some healthy competition and now we got to figure out who's gonna play here and who's gonna play 2nd and who's gonna play 3rd and where's Shad Vedaa gonna play because he hit .500 and led our high school team from the 9th spot so you know it's a great problem to have is that we have almost too many kids to play.
Ryan Kuntz, 3rd Base:We know that we have a lot of talent on our team and when we all play as we should there's not a lot of teams that should be able to stop us.
Isaac Effertz, Centerfield:We feel pretty confident about our team, we got a lot of people coming back, I think we only lost one starter from last year and I feel pretty good about our chances.
As far as sectional play, the Niners will play in the second tier of a new 3 class system which means their sectional competition will be different.
We're not sure what's gonna happen with this new 3 tier format staying in the middle. It's different so we don't know a lot of our traditional rivals are gone, we don't play the Surrey's, the Rolette's, the Cando's, the Harvey's anymore. Now we got Watford City, Beulah, Makoti etc. and we don't know much about most of those teams so it will be an interesting summer and hopefully it turns out well for us.
Velva will open its season tomorrow night when the team hosts Surrey in non-sectional play.
