Students Take Part in Tech Camp

Posted: Updated:

Students normally have to power down during the school day...

No texting, no facebook messages...

But today... a group of students gets assigned to experience the tech world.

Steph Scheurer takes us to the Bismarck State College Campus where the computers are turned on and teens are tuned in to technology.

"Meeting new people and I wanted to do some fun things," says Andrew Anderson, Freshman.

That's what camps are for.

But you don't need bug spray for this one.

"I like it, it's fun," says Sydney Roller, 6th Grader.

"It's fun because like, you get to learn about different technologies," says Cory Wheeler, 7th Grader.

Fourteen middle and high school students take part in Tech Camp.

It's Bismarck State College's first year holding this one day event.

"We want to get more kids interested in technology and give them some choices so that when they're in middle school and high school, they can maybe begin to start taking some technology related classes," says Karen Arlien, Dept. Chairperson, Computers & Office Technology.

Tech Camp gives these tech talented teens hands on experience in web page development, computer support, and computer programming.

"Technology seems really fun to me because like, working with computers is sometimes easy but it can be fun and like you can program stuff," says Layne Larson.

"They've been pretty excited. They're learning a lot, I think we're throwing a lot at them even though it's a one day camp but they are doing fun things and they're really eager to explore," says Arlien.

Their favorite part...

"Taking apart the computer," says Anderson.

"Taking apart the computer," says Roller.

"Taking apart the computer," says Larson.

But what these students will take with them after the camp, are tech tips that will help them in their future classes and careers.

"If they're interested in this kind of stuff I'd definitely tell them to do it," says Anderson.

If you'd like to get your child involved next year, an information page will be posted soon on the BSC website.
