Students Propose Laws to Lawmakers

Posted: Updated:

Students at Bismarck High School get a chance to see what it's like to be a lawmaker.

As part of a social studies summer school class the students got to propose new laws to local politicians.

They discussed new bills about controversial topics such as drug testing, the death penalty, and bullying.

It was a chance to learn about the legislative process.

Students say there was a good back and forth between both sides on the issues and at times the discussion was intense.

"I actually found it quite interesting because it was something that I could pick and choose what I wanted to do." says Sydney Knox

"Because it's definitely a good thing to know where our government is headed and new laws in the states and even the U.S." says Madison Jochim

"This is just a way to show that we do have a big say no matter what just as big a say as adults do.  You have to voice your opinions and make sure that whatever you feel passionate about is heard." says Rick Hentz

The two lawmakers present were Senator Margret Sitte and Representative Jason Dockter.

Dockter was impressed by how serious the students took the project.

He said he wouldn't be surprised if some of them grow up to be politicians themselves.
