New City Commission to Be Sworn in Tuesday Night

Posted: Updated:

Bismarck will swear in its new City Commission tomorrow night, but one seat remains open.

Commissioner Mike Seminary will officially become the next Mayor of Bismarck tomorrow night leaving a vacancy on the city commission.

But, Seminary says there are a few options the Commission can take to fill the seat.

He says he doesn't believe the Commission will be interested in holding a special election or waiting until the next election and putting someone in temporarily.

He says the electorate does have the opportunity to submit a name for the position if they circulate petitions.

But, they must get at least five percent of the last vote to have that name confirmed by the Commission.

The most likely option is that the Commission will offer up a name and vote on it.

Seminary says he's hoping to have the spot filled quickly to move on to other matters.

There are currently two years left on his Commission seat.

" I'm leaning towards someone that's willing to run, has run, would run again so that we could have consistency over this next four year period of time," says Bismarck Mayor Elect Mike Seminary.

Seminary says discussions on who could potentially fill that seat will not take place until mid-July.

He says by law the seat will remain open for 15 days.
