New License Plates Approved

Posted: Updated:

License plates across the state will soon be taking on a new look.

The North Dakota Department of Transportation teams up with the tourism industry and the Highway Patrol to pick a design for the new plate.

The new look keeps the buffalo and wheat grass but sets them in front of a sunrise background.

The design will no longer have raised letters or numbers but will be flat across the plate.

28 other states are already flat.

Legislation approved 4.9 million dollars for Roughrider Industries to produce the new plates.

The distribution process will take about two years and begins in fall of 2015.

"North Dakota has beautiful skies and sunrises, we thought that was a nice part to show and that wheat is our number one crop in the state, and the buffalo shows our heritage." says Peggy Anderson with the Department of Transportation

The current design has been in circulation for 22 years.
