Today was the start of a big weekend for veterans all over North Dakota, with the American Legion Convention being held for the next 3 days in Minot.
The mission of this annual convention is to discuss plans for youth groups such as boys and girls state, and spend time with old friends.
This year, a big topic being talked about is the scandal surrounding care at VA hospitals around the country.
Commanders say medical care for veterans is something that needs to be improved, and they have high hopes for improvement.
(Wayne Satrom, National Vice Commander for American Legion Midwest Region) "We have very good hospitals, there's no doubt about it. But so many times, we have veterans that cannot get their care right away, and that gets to be a big issue. They're on a waiting list, and they wait and wait, and that is really unacceptable."
(Eugene Kachena, Department Commander for ND) "There's an awful lot of wrongdoings that have to be corrected, it's probably going to take months, maybe years, but hopefully the process has started."
The state convention will continue through Sunday, and elections for new positions in the state American Legion will be held on that day.
