Minot, Williston, and other large cities have had a population boom in the past 5 years.
But other, smaller cities are also expanding quickly, and this has been causing infrastructure, sewage, and other issues in communities like Surrey.
Senator Heidi Heitkamp met with Surrey officials at the city hall this afternoon to discuss what steps need to be taken to solve these issues.
Concerns about railway safety in the small town were also addressed today, and city leaders hope to take action as soon as possible.
Heitkamp says that it's important that these smaller communities aren't overlooked.
(Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, (D) North Dakota) "I know what small towns preserve in terms of our culture in North Dakota. I think that being able to accommodate new families offer them an alternative to, maybe, bigger city life in Minot, and be able to build a community around the new growth is really the challenge of these city leaders, but I know they're up to the challenge."
Heitkamp is currently working in the Senate to address the growth challenges these communities are facing.
