Members of the American Legion across North Dakota are in Minot this weekend for their state convention.
Last night, the group heard from both US Senators from the state.
John Hoeven paid tribute to veterans and their families for the sacrifices they have made in defending the nation.
Heidi Heitkamp said she wants to raise awareness of post traumatic stress disorder among veterans.
Heitkamp stopped by the KX News studio and said she is also concerned that younger veterans are not joining groups that advocate for veterans such as the American Legion.
(Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, (D) North Dakota) "They are a powerful voice for veterans. They are constantly monitoring what Congress does and what the administration does and they're making sure that veterans get what they've earned. Without those organizations and that advocacy, I think we will lose an opportunity to do the right thing and so the next generation needs to step up and help these guys who are coming out of Korea and Vietnam who are getting older who need to pass the torch of advocacy on to a new generation.""
The state American Legion convention continues through tomorrow in Minot.
