Bismarck Workers Fight the Wind

Posted: Updated:

Wind gusts of up to nearly 50 miles per hour rip across the state today.

Although many of us try and take shelter inside...

A lot of people have to be out in the wind-- for work.

Macy Egeland reports.

Many of you probably noticed that it was awfully windy out today.. definitely a bad day to wear your hair down, for instance. But while it may have just been a nuisance for most of you.. some people had to work in these conditions all day long.

"It could go a lot easier if it was nice out," Doug Martwick said.

These men working with Northern Improvement not only have to be outside all day in the cold wind and rain.. but they work while standing on thin, slippery boards.

"It just makes our job a little tougher and a little more dangerous, especially when you're on a wall," Martwick said.

His crew isn't the only one having to be out in the elements...

Garbage collectors throughout Bismarck have to pick up... even more than usual.

"All the cans are all tipped over and all the garbage is blowing out...That's not too much fun."

Employees at Generous Jerry's Fireworks at least have a roof over their head while they work, but they spend most of their day trying to keep their products dry.

"It's definitely not fun. It's cold and when the rain kind of drips in that's no fun and we have to scramble and put the plastic over the fireworks," Mackenzie Martin said.

And while most people get to go home at the end of the day, this group has to sleep inside a tent during the windy, rainy nights.

"We have to wake up in the middle of the night if it's raining and get everything ready and save everything and the poles of the tent have fallen down a couple of times and so it's definitely not fun," Martin said.

Unfortunately, meteorologists say these workers may have to bear the breeze for yet another day before it dies down.

Reporting in Bismarck.. I'm Macy Egeland.
