New Flood Plain Map for Bismarck

City planners and FEMA worked together to update the flood plain map for the town of Bismarck.

The process took about four years to complete.

It's required for the city to participate in the National Flood Plain Insurance program.

The program allows residents to obtain flood insurance.

It also requires homeowners who live in the flood plain to have flood insurance.

A little more than 200 plots of land were added to the flood plain since the map was last done in 2005.

195 were removed.

The research for the 2014 map focused on tributaries around the Missouri River.

A planner with the city of Bismarck says the 2011 flood took care of the research needed for the river.

"We've seen what the river does. It studies the tributaries throughout the community; Haycreek Watershed, Apple Creek, Jackman Coulee, some areas on 4th Street. It really refined our study methods to give us some really good readings about what those watersheds are going to do in reference to flooding," says Jenny Wollmuth/Bismarck planner.

Wollmuth says the flood plain map is available on the Bismarck city website or at the city planning office.

If your land is in the flood plain, and you have a mortgage, the bank should have already contacted you about obtaining flood insurance.
