Heartview Players Use Softball in Road to Recovery

Posted: Updated:
Summer is here and Slowpitch softball is in full form-- a sport some associate with having a cold adult beverage after the game.
For one Slowpitch team--you'll only find water in their coolers.
Jalen Jaspers has more.

The battle of recovery from alcohol or drug addiction isn't easy.

but The Heartview foundation team is full of players taking the diamond on Wednesday nights-- who are finding hope and rehabilitation in the game of softball.
(Austin Laducer/Heartview Player/Coach)  me and a friend of mine put it together to give guys a chance, who normally wouldn't have a chance in Bismarck softball to come out and do something and be a part of something."
Recovery doesn't just happen overnight-- it's a process taken one day at a time.
(John Fagan/Heartview Player) It's a lifestyle, you know? So yeah I was a recovery coach this past winter at Heartview so it's kind of like been there done that, how can I help?
The key for this group of players is getting some normalcy back in their lives.
For The Heartview team they're just another group of guys, playing a game that they love.
(Austin Laducer/Heartview Player/Coach) we're no different than any other team in Bismarck. Bismarck is a softball town and there's a lot of tough teams here and I'm just grateful that I'm a part of that.
Everyday is a new adventure. Strengthening bonds, and learning new things.
Through this team-- they have found even more support.
(Ron Rivinius/Heartview Player)  it's important that we get in environments that we were at in before when we were drinking or doing whatever it might be. And now we're in an environment where we can actually encourage one another and learn to live life, and learn to take the ups and downs of life in this type of environment.
(Austin Laducer/Heartview Player/Coach) what I enjoy the most is just the fellowship man the brotherhood you know? Even though we have our tough times in this you know, we still stick together and we never quit. And it's just a great thing to be apart of.
AT 1 and 11 this season-- It's clearly about more than just wins or losses for the Heartview team.
