Canada Fires Bring Smoke to ND

Posted: Updated:

There's smoke...but there's no fire...at least not in North Dakota.

The haze is coming from fires burning in Northwest Canada.

Meteorologist Ken Simosko says there are about 93 fires still burning in that territory.

Even though we're nearly 12 hundred miles away, he says the atmosphere gets ahold of the smoke and maintains it as it travels here.

"We're talking about massive amounts of smoke, plumes of smoke and these winds are traveling at a good, anywhere from 80 miles per hour to say 130 miles per hour and it'll take those plumes of smoke and it'll hurry up and and just move them to the South and East depending on the direction," says Ken Simosko, Meteorologist, National Weather Service in Bismarck.

Simosko says we're typically unable to smell the smoke until after midnight to before sunrise when the smoke particles have lowered.

The hazy appearance here seems to be the talk of the town.

We have received dozens of photos from viewers on our Facebook page.

Simosko says should start to see a decrease in the smoke later on tonight and tomorrow.
