Ft. Lincoln Custer House Celebrates 25 Years

Posted: Updated:

North Dakota is celebrating two very special anniversary's this summer..

It's our state's 125th birthday, and it's also the 25th anniversary of when the replica of the Fort Lincoln Commanding Officers Quarters opened.

Today General Custer's home was rededicated.. The reconstruction of it was opened in 1989.

People got the chance to tour the house and learn about how they lived back then.

To celebrate the rededication, they are also replicating a photo that was taken on the front steps of the home.

All of the actors are posing the same way General Custer and the others did back then.. they are also taking the picture with a camera similar to the one they would have taken the original photo with.

Three people, including Senator Heidi Heitkamp, spoke at the event and stressed how important Fort Lincoln and Custer's home are to North Dakota's history.

"There were years and years and years of research including archeological research that was done to try and make sure that this was as authentic of an experience as what there possibly could be...and this structure that we're rededicating after 25 years this also defines us. This is part of our heritage part of our culture and part of our history," Senator Heidi Heitkamp said.

After the rededication, they also had a classic car display and an artillery demonstration.
