Oil Production Up in May

Posted: Updated:

Oil production numbers are up again for the month of May.

Over 32 million barrels were produced. That's over one million barrels a day for the second month in a row.

The majority of oil is coming from the Bakken and Three Forks.

Producing wells also reached an all-time high, with nearly 10,900 in the state.

North Dakota Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms says permits are already up significantly as oil companies begin to focus on next winter.

"They're not only permitting wells that they've got to get drilled this summer and trying to backfill whatever the rigs are using, but they're already looking at the construction season and knowing that somewhere between Halloween and Thanksgiving all the well pads need to be constructed," says Helms.

Helms says as the North Dakota Industrial Commission implements gas capture plans, oil companies are beginning to focus more long-term.
