River Road Closes Due to Railroad Maintenance

Posted: Updated:

With construction projects come those dreaded detours...

and it's no different when crews are repairing the railroads.

The Missouri River is a popular summertime spot.

"I come down here with my dog, play on the beaches and stuff," says Paxton Strand.

And River Road is an easy access point to having fun in the sun.

"I ride the bike path quite a bit," says William Peterson.

But you may have to change your path for the next few days...as River Road, from Burnt Boat Drive to Fraine Barracks Road, is closed during the day.

"This is a pretty heavily-trafficked road so I believe it does hamper some people because it's a more direct route for some people than others," says Strand.

Beginning Tuesday, BNSF is replacing ties and rail on a portion of the railroad bridge.

"They're working with a lot of heavy equipment and tools up there and they don't want anything to fall down on the traveling public or pedestrians walking underneath the bridge," says Keith Glass, Roads & Streets Supervisor.

"Yeah I think I'll stay away from that," says Peterson.

Others ...not so much.

"Yeah they don't abide by road closed signs much. If they can find a way to go around them, they'll go around them," says Glass.

Glass says the road is closed for a reason.

"They aren't closed just to hinder your driving operation. I mean there's a hazard, that's why they're closed so we ask the public to, you know, please stay away from those areas."

While taking a detour might put a slight damper on your plans, BNSF and the city say safety is the priority.

"I think I'm going to go down here and fish for a bit. Just stay on this side of the signs," says Aaron Mullins.

The most recent public service announcement the city released says that portion of River Road will be closed from 8am to 5pm today and tomorrow.

The schedule is subject to change at the discretion of BNSF but the city plans to keep residents updated.
