Monitoring the Building Boom

Posted: Updated:

New residential and commercial construction sites have been popping up all over the Bakken oilfield for the past five years, and while the building is not new, the North Dakota Attorney General's office wants to make sure contractors are legally licensed and obtaining the proper permits.

(Parrell Grossman, Attorney General Consumer Protection Division) "We have found in the majority of this trip, that the majority of contractors are licensed. Between yesterday and today, we have now visited 31 construction job sites, and we have verified about 114 contractors. We have really determined a handful of unlicensed contractors."

Risks come along with letting unlicensed contractors perform work.

For example, workers liability and consumer protection could be nonexistent in these companies.

Once investigators discover this fraudulent behavior they take action.(Parrell Grossman, Attorney General Consumer Protection Division) "If you're not licensed you stop the work. So it can delay a substantial project, sometimes a multimillion dollar project, if you're not licensed."

The protection division will continue with randomized inspections all the way from Williston to Minot.
