North Dakota Game and Fish Department Head Answers to Unfavorable State Audit

Posted: Updated:
A state legislative committee hears testimony from the head of the Game and Fish Department about an audit that found more than 40 errors.

The North Dakota Auditor's office filed the audit of Game and Fish in April.

The 38 page report cited Game and Fish for making mistakes in areas including how they reimburse employees, how they handle sensitive information, and how they keep track of guns used for hunter education.

Game and Fish director Terry Steinwand answered questions at the Legislative Audit and Fiscal Review committee at the state Capitol today.

He says his department has agreed to, and is in the process of, fixing 43 of the 44 items in the audit.

The final item has to do with uniform purchases...and Steinwand says he'll work with the legislature on a solution to that issue.

"We were all disappointed that we did so poorly in this audit and everybody feels accountable for this so there's been a real buy in from staff that we're going to do better. And I promised the governor and I promised the state auditor that by the time the re-audit comes around, I promise that all these will be met," says Terry Steinwand/North Dakota Game and Fish Department.

The report shows the department didn't keep track of more than 100 guns it handed out to hunter education instructors.

He says 18 guns are still unaccounted for.

He cited difficulty in tracking the educators.
