Distance is a Concern for Bismarck Rural Fire Dept.

Posted: Updated:

In just the past couple of weeks, two homes have been destroyed by fire just outside of Bismarck..

Both of them were many miles away from a fire station.

Bismarck Rural Fire Chief Al Klein says his crew covers about 450 square miles on the outskirts of Bismarck.. that includes all of Lincoln and Menoken.

Bismarck itself is only 31 square miles.

Their station is located on East Main.. a few miles off of Expressway Avenue..

There they have 5 full time firefighters and 29 volunteers on call at all times.

They also have an un-manned station North of Bismarck on Aurora Loop.

Chief Klein says even with both of these stations, often times it takes them 15 or 20 minutes to get to a fire.

He says it's a risk people take when they decide to live out of town.

"I think that's an important fact to remember is people who decide to live 20 miles or 15 miles out of the city limits have to know that it's going to take whatever emergency services they need that long to get there," Bismarck Rural Fire Chief Al Klein said.

Chief Klein says in the past, they have talked about building another station, but he says there's always the issue of where it would go and how much it would cost.

In comparison, the Mandan Rural Fire Department covers an even larger area..

Chief Lynn Gustin says their region is 725 square miles.
