Ranchers Pay Checks Drive Equipment Sales

Posted: Updated:
Record high cattle prices aren't just good news for ranchers, but for those also selling the equipment needed to raise those high dollar animals.
Ag Reporter Sarah Heinrich takes you to the State Fair for the story.

Layne Ankenbauer/ Equipment Picker) "We just sold a baler here this morning."

Ranchers getting paid...means it's also pay day for equipment dealers.

Layne Ankenbauer is the owner of Equipment Picker in Kenmare.

He says trailer sales have been hot, as well as post hole pounders.

(Layne Ankenbauer/ Equipment Picker) "It's good to see, good cattle prices. Guys are very excited about it. A lot of guys are talking about this fall, as soon as I sell my calves I'll be calling ya."

Randy Korslien owns Korral Supply in Douglas.

Korslien says their livestock trailer sales have more than doubled in the past 3 years.

He says ranchers aren't just buying new trailers, but bigger trailers.

(Randy Korslien / Korral Supply) "People are upgrading and it seems that they are upgrading to larger stock trailers. I think part of it is our demographic and losing our sales ring last year in Minot. That changed it and cattle prices have been driving it as well."

Korslien says it's about time ranchers finally get paid for their hard work.

(Randy Korslien / Korral Supply) "It's so fun. You grow up in this territory and work cattle all your life. Guys struggle with cattle prices and its finally nice to see them getting some money for their labor."

In Minot for KX News, I am Sarah Heinrich.

Ankenbauer says he's selling trailers all over the state and there is a 6 month wait when you order.
