Burleigh and Morton Joint Jail Plans Begin

Posted: Updated:

It may be the biggest joint project that's ever happened for Burleigh and Morton Counties.

Plans are underway for the Joint Detention Center but it will still be at least two years until it's built.

A committee between the two counties meets to get the construction contract in place so architects can start designing.

The joint jail committee also has to establish operation plans and staffing during the construction of the jail.

Burleigh County Sheriff Pat Heinert says both counties are working well together and communication is huge for both county leaders.

"If we see something we think needs to be said, we're saying it and if anybody has any questions of us, please ask, you know, because we want to be totally open and totally transparent with this process. We want to make sure people agree with what we're doing here and making sure that it's done right," says Pat Heinert, Burleigh County Sheriff.

Heinert said the goal is to begin construction next spring.

He says the project will take about 18 to 24 months to complete.
