Sanford Continues to Need More Physicians

Posted: Updated:

With increasing population across the state, there is one industry that's desperate for more workers.

Sanford Health in Bismarck continues to need more physicians and nurses.

Currently Sanford has between 40 to 45 openings on a yearly basis.

Director of Physician Recruitment Connie Long says this is mainly due to new medical services and specialists.

They've added a physician that specializes in dermatology and pathology and an ENT physician specializing in cochlear implants.

She says once they recruit physicians, they seem to really like it here.

She says Sanford in Bismarck has one of the lowest turnover rates in the upper midwest.

The national average is seven to nine percent and they're around 3.5 percent.

"The Sanford organization, when they say we are a family, it's truly a family. They are very welcoming to all new people that come into the community and into the organization. But I think the physicians and the staff that currently work here are our best supporter and are probably the main reason why people want to stay here," says Connie Long, Director of Physician Recruitment & Retention.

Long says the most difficult area to recruit in is family and internal medicine.

She says this is because the numbers aren't as high for those going through training.
