Minot Man Pleads Not Guilty to Sex Crimes

Posted: Updated:

A Minot man charged with 17 felonies and 2 misdemeanors regarding using the internet to promote obscenity and lure minors has entered his pleas in district court.

20-year-old Nicholas Thiel appeared before Northwest District Judge Gary Lee and said he is "not guilty" of the crimes.

Thiel is accused of using the internet - specifically Facebook - to send photos of his genitalia to girls under age 18.

In addition, he is accused of a Class-B Felony of promoting an obscene performance by a minor in trying to convince a 12-year-old girl to strip and send him photos.

The Class-B Felony carries a maximum 10 year prison sentence.

The other felony charges arrayed against Thiel are Class-C Felonies with 5-year maximum sentences.

Those Class-C charges include ten counts of promoting obscenity to minors and two counts of luring minors by computer.

He's also charged with terrorizing, for allegedly threatening to rape one girl who would not comply with his online demands.

In today's preliminary hearing, investigators said Thiel had sent photos of his genitalia to all of the girls, who ranged in age from 12 to 17.

Out of the original 17 felony charges, three were dismissed by Judge Lee because there was no provable way for Thiel to have known they were underage.

Thiel is being held in the Ward County Jail, awaiting his next court date in just over two weeks.
