Flaring Numbers Decrease

Posted: Updated:
North Dakota keeps producing natural gas at a record pace.

And the state has set a goal to waste less and less of it through flaring as time goes on.

By October, the goal is to reduce flaring to 26 percent statewide.

A report to the North Dakota Industrial Commission shows the industry is on track with those goals.

In the first quarter of 2014, North Dakota producers reduced flaring to 28 percent...down from 29 percent from the first quarter last year.

(Bruce Hicks/ ND Oil and Gas) "What's happening is that the percent of flared gas is not only coming down, but the total volume of gas is coming down. So, we're having an increase in production every month and we're having a decrease in the total volume that's being flared. And we're hopeful that will continue on its way downward."

Some other interesting numbers from the first quarter report from the oil and gas division -

More than 10,000 wells are producing oil in the state.

That's up almost two thousand from this time last year.
