Man's Best Friends Put on a Show

Posted: Updated:
It's getting to be the dog days of summer but there's more than just the weather to talk about.

Today the 8th annual Bismarck Kennel Club Dog Show is going on at the VFW, one of only two dog shows in the entire state.

Reporter Ben Smith shakes some paws to meet some of this year's top dogs.

"Are you ready to show?" says dog handler Barb Plum

They are often referred to as man's best friend.

But is your best friend always this demanding?

"I'm her slave, she is my master." says Plum

This is Khaleesi.

She is a two year old Afghan hound, and has been competing since she was about 6 months old.

She has made an appearance into about 15 different shows.

And about that appearance...

"She takes about 3 hours to groom each time we have a bath."

Barb Plum along with her husband have been showing their dogs for years...

"It's a fun hobby for us, my husband and I like to do it together.  He is my groomer...he gets her ready for me and all I have to do is run around the ring."

Dozens of different dogs are running around this weekend...

There are pomeranians and Greyhounds, Australian cattle dogs, and much more.

(Ben Smith, KXNews)"This here is Pickles, she is a two year old long-haired dachshund and this is her fifth competition."

Bismarck Kennel Club President Nancy Lane talks about why handlers go to all this work for their dogs.

"Almost all of our club members are working at least in some form, and some part of it...No one gets paid this is all because we have a passion for dogs." says Nancy Lane

And a passion for winning.

"I get butterflies in my stomach when the judge points to us and says you get the point or you get the ribbon...she got best of breed today in the Afghan hound so it's adrenaline.  You get excited and the judge points to you and you just get a thrill every time." says Plum

But all Khaleesi cares about is those two magic words.

"Good Girl!"
