22nd Annual CANDISC Bicycle Tour

Posted: Updated:

More than 200 people from all across the United States flock to North Dakota this week.

It's the seven day 22nd Annual CANDISC Bicycle Tour.

It's not a race, but a ride...

Across 400 miles of North Dakota's scenic prairies.

"It's my 4th year and it's pretty fun," says Jackson Dekle, Atlanta Georgia.

Enough fun that Jackson Dekle travels all the way from Atlanta Georgia every year.

The bike ride is known as CANDISC - Cycling Around North Dakota in Sakakawea Country.

"I love bicycling," says Ann Buettner Glass, Fargo.

"It's a family thing," says Dekle.

It's become a tradition for Jackson and his grandparents.

"Every year when you come back, you meet some new people and you renew old friendships. It's almost like a family," says Buettner Glass.

"You meet a lot of new faces and have fun in the process," says Dekle.

This is the 22nd year of CANDISC- with 200 people from 22 states and 5 Canadian provinces putting a leisurely pedal to the metal to tour North Dakota.

"I just love the fresh air, the sunshine, just the beauty of being outdoors and exercising," says Buettner Glass.

The route began near Garrison with six overnight stays in communities throughout the south central part of the state.

"The people in the towns have been so wonderful to us. Just, they can't do enough and you feel at home all the time," says Buettner Glass.

"It's fun to introduce new people to North Dakota and they go away saying, wow this state is really a great state rather than just thinking that it's just a flat pancake and you know snow 12 months out of the year is what some of them think," says Dick Messerly, Created CANDISC.

"It's a lot flatter," says Dekle.

Well, flatter than Georgia...but fun enough to keep cyclists from other states and even our own coming back year after year.

It's a great experience," says Buettner Glass.

Messerly says this year 60 percent of the riders are from out of state.

The 2014 tour started on the 2nd and runs through the 9th.
