Bismarck Community Celebrates 'National Night Out'

Posted: Updated:

Although people across the country gather for an annual safety event, it's the third "Night Out' in Bismarck.

'National Night Out' celebrates its 30th anniversary this year across America to promote safe communities.

Tonight the Bismarck Police Department had many special teams come out to teach people about crime prevention.

Officer Lynn Wanner says the event is a chance to interact with the community.

"The purpose of it is to bring neighborhoods together, bring the community together, basically a night out against crime, just to get people aware of the services that are available in the community, the different groups that are available to help people and just to have some fun," Bismarck Police Officer Lynn Wanner.

The Bismarck Bomb Squad was there to show off some of its equipment including protective helmets, suits and even their robot, Wally.

The rover is used to check out suspicious packages without putting humans in danger.

"We can run it remotely from inside our truck and so we can send the robot down range, look at the package and we can make an assessment from it inside of our truck with actually not having to send a bomb tech down there," says Bomb Team Member for the Bismarck Bomb Squad Kendall Vetter.

Wally has four cameras and a water disrupter that can shoot at packages.

Vetter says a robot like it costs about 600,000 dollars.
