Emett Weigel's Story

Posted: Updated:

Napoleon, North Dakota has had its share of tragedy this year.

From two grain bin deaths to now a near drowning of a small boy.

On July 18, the Weigel's were at a family event when celebration quickly turned to tragedy after their three-year-old son Emett disappeared.

"We were looking and no one could find him and one of the ladies that was there was walking down and she saw his shoe basically sticking out of the water and grabbed on and he was there and pulled him out," says Charles Weigel, Emett's Dad.

Charles says they aren't sure how long Emett was under water.

He was air-lifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis where he remains in ICU.

The doctors say Emett has a severe anoxic brain injury.

"He seems to be a little more responsive every day. We had him actually up and walking with assistance with the OT yesterday and he was able to take maybe between 10 and 20 steps or so between two trips that he took," says Charles Weigel, Emett's Dad.

Charles says they didn't think he'd be able to walk yet so they were surprised.

He says Emett is not able to talk yet but each small improvement is a milestone for his family.

"We're waiting on each day little miracles kind of so celebrating all of the little miracles. We've seen more improvement than we've had setbacks recently so he's been doing quite well," says Weigel.

While Charles and his wife Danielle remain by their son's side, the community of Napoleon has their back.

From chiropractors volunteering their time to keep Charles' practice going, to lemonade stands toT-shirtss to prayers...the Weigel family is filled with love and support.

"We really appreciate everything that everyone's done and hope to hopefully get home in the future so we can see a lot of these people and thank them personally for all the help that they've given us," says Weigel.

Charles says they will hopefully be transferring Emett to a pediatric rehab center within the next week.

We'll have more on how local chiropractors from across the state are helping the family... tomorrow.
