Six 'Teddies' and an Edith

Posted: Updated:
6 Teddies came from far and wide to be in Medora today.

And we are not talking about the stuffed animal.

The old town theater in Medora had some of the countries leading Theodore Roosevelt impersonators stop in to celebrate the 153rd birthday of Edith Roosevelt.

Reporter Ben Smith spoke to several performers about bringing the former president to life.

I'm in downtown Medora North Dakota where six historical re enactors from around the country will portray president Theodore Roosevelt together for the first time ever.

The six teddies along with one Mrs. Roosevelt will be performing throughout the day at the old downtown theater in Medora.

We spoke to one re enactor Steve Stark who comes from Fargo North Dakota.  He opened the event by literally drawing the audience a picture of Teddy Roosevelt's history in North Dakota.

"We're a visual people, look at television.  And watching that unfold is just a lot of fun and it stays with us.  They're hearing it and then they're seeing it and not only that, they are seeing it come to life and it's a wonderful teaching tool I think."  says Steve Stark

We also spoke to the only reenacting couple at the event.

Larry and Julie Marple hail from south Charleston, Ohio and have been performing as Theodore and Edith Roosevelt for 6 years.

"T R would not have been the man he was without the balancing of Edith with him.

So she is my balance for everything we do, I am impulsive like Theodore Roosevelt was and she is the calm around the storm." says Larry & Julia Marple

Finally, we caught up with one performer who has portrayed Theodore Roosevelt for over 50 years.

"To me this is a frail man that became successful because he believed in the quality of life.  He dared to do, he seized the day.  And I feel in my life, I have bad eyes, I was not a good speller.  And he helped me see my way, he became my mentor.  And every time I read a new book, I get more and more excited" says Martin Jonason

The event was held on the 153rd birthday of Edith Roosevelt.
The performances will conclude with all 6 "teddies" serenading Edith for her birthday right before they sit down together to watch the Medora Musical.
