New Fitness Center Coming to Bismarck-Mandan

Posted: Updated:

It's been the talk of the town in Mandan and today Sanford Health and the Y make a big joint announcement.

It's been a discussion for more than 6 years and in the spring of 2016, it will be a reality.

Sanford Health and Missouri Valley Family YMCA are partnering to bring a new family focused fitness center to the community.

"We're going to create a healthier, more vibrant place to live and raise our families," says Bill Bauman, Exec. Director, Missouri Valley Family YMCA.

Family Wellness is a 12.3 million dollar project to be located directly South of Raging Rivers Water Park.

"I think that this location and in Mandan is going to afford additional opportunity for people to get active, address childcare and improve the quality of life in Mandan and Bismarck," says Craig Lambrecht, Sanford Bismarck President.

The goal is to reduce chronic disease factors, promote family time, and meet the needs of the aging population.

"I think it's the greatest thing. If you don't exercise you're just going to get old (laughs)," says Alice Ternes.

Exercising will be even more convenient if you already have a Y membership.

"We're trying to be as easy as we can to allow people to go back and forth and their families and kids to go back and forth," says Lambrecht.

This 41,000 square foot facility will be just a seven minute drive for the majority of Bismarck-Mandan both communities the opportunity to be healthy.

"I think the new Y coming into Mandan is going to be really good for the community. It's going to be more accessible to the people in Mandan and it's going to help out a lot of people," says Scott Pomeroy.

"Now I have a place for my friends in Mandan to join up with and we can work out together easier, " says Chanda Castle.

By making the path to wellness a convenient one, the new facility offers another option for people living along the Missouri River.

Bauman says the planning for Family Wellness will begin in the fall and construction will start up in the Spring of 2015.

The current YMCA in Bismarck is getting a face-lift.

Executive Director Bill Bauman says they're going from wellness center to welcome center.

It's a big remodel project of the front entry and service desk area.

The 1970s brick will be updated and painted along with new ceilings and flooring.

Bauman says it will be a more comfortable, organic space where people can really connect.

"We have a state of the art facility here and it's important for us to keep up with this facility - make it fresh and new. Now we've got a new facility coming on the horizon with Family Wellness, we want the main Y site to be just as fresh and new," says Bill Bauman, Executive Director, Missouri Valley Family YMCA.

The remodel will be complete by the beginning of October.
