Dickinson State Starting Fresh

Posted: Updated:
A fresh start---it's exactly what the Dickinson State football team is excited for this season.
Not only does DSU have a new head coach--but the team also left their old Frontier Conference behind and joined the North Star Athletic Association.
Ashley St. Louis has more.

100 players hit the gridiron on Monday for Dickinson State's first practice.
And this year--it was a new man calling the shots on the field--after 14 years of coaching under Hank Biesiot--Pete Stanton was named the new head coach in June.

"It was a cool feeling because he's going to bring a new concept to DSU, he brought the pistol and the um, spread to us and I think that's very diverse and it will help out talent wise achieve more this year."

After a long stint as an assistant coach--Stanton said he learned a lot from Coach Biesiot-- but still wants to maintain his own identity.
Mixing old philosophies with a new approach.

"We have some of the same but also some different, I think you know I think everybody, whether it's me or coach Hoffman, or coach Schillinger, or coach Biesiot, you have to be yourself and I think that's the most important thing, obviouslyy it would be smart to, and will carry on those traditions that coach had, but also I have to be my own person."

while Stanton is getting used to the new responsibilities--he is also preparing for a different look on the schedule--after the school switched to the North Star Athletic Association.
there are a few reasons why the team is looking forward to joining the new conference.

"For me it's just the old rivalries are back, you know, I mean DSU has been playing schools like Jamestown, and Mayville, and Valley forever, I mean since my dad's played here so, it's going to be good to get those rivalries back."

"A big part of it is travel, you know the traditional rivalries that we had you know, people in the stands at Dickinson State understand Jamestown and Valley City and Mayville and the traditional teams in our conference, and we always used to have the best following in the conference on the road, and now we'll be able to get back to that."

Just like mixing old and new philosophies the team will be mixing old and new opponents. Dickinson State will be hanging onto their Montanarivalriess by continuing to play Rocky Mountain College and Northern Montana.
