St. Mary's Cemetery Vandalized

Posted: Updated:

St. Mary's Cemetery in Bismarck was vandalized sometime last night, causing nearly $20,000 in total damage.

Graffiti covers multiple statues, headstones, signs, trees and rocks.

Macy Egeland introduces us to one family now cleaning up the mess with heavy hearts.

"We've got a very close family," John Windsor said.

"Susanne and I have been blessed with 14 children. We have 5 in Heaven and 9 on earth. Our 2 twins are buried here," he added.

The Windsor family couldn't believe their eyes when they saw the and black paint covering the statue they put up in honor of their girls.

"Honestly it sickened my heart and these are our baby girls and this is a sacred place and somebody came through and desecrated the monument to the memory of our children," Windsor said.

Now they're working to wipe away the mess and the pain it's brought back to their family.

"We actually set a rosary for them while we were cleaning specifically that the Lord will touch their heart and they'll realize how bad it is the things that they've done today," Windsor said.

The other damage is littered across the cemetery grounds..covering headstones, trees and signs.

Cemetery Manager Deacon Rex McDowall says it's been 16 years since they've seen vandalism this bad. Back then, it was broken headstones.

"We pray for the people that have done this that they can have a change of heart and pray for the families that are affected by this that they need their prayers. They're damaged and they're going through another time of grief that they really didn't need," Deacon Rex McDowall Cemetery Manager said.

And after hours of cleaning and scrubbing.. the whole family continued to work throughout the cemetery to protect the other families from the pain the damage brought to them.

Reporting in Bismarck, I'm Macy Egeland.

Deacon McDowall says they have the cemetery well lit and will have police drive through more often to prevent this from happening again.
