County Waiting on Bond Vote Timing

Posted: Updated:

Ward County Commissioners today tried to nail down a time to hold a special election required to ask citizens for more funds to complete a jail expansion...

10 million dollars was what was thought to be needed for the jail portion of the project...but that won't build a big enough facility...so the commission is forced to go back to voters again.

Before the ballot question can go before voters however, commissioners need to know how much more is needed...

They appeared frustrated over a lack of information coming in on what that figure is, and actually placed a call during the meeting to JLG Architects checking on the status of that question...

(Jerome Gruenberg - Ward County Commission Chair) "Discussion was whether or not the jail consultant or the engineer or architect and whether Adolph Peterson has been contacted yet for getting pricing yet so that we can work something into a ballot measure." "Yes, we are working on that right now. The contact has been made." (Jerome) "When will they be coming back to us?" "That I don't know."

Commissioners need the information as soon as possible to get the question to voters.

That is hoped to happen in late January or early February.

Voters had earlier passed a half-cent sales tax to raise up to 39-and-a-half million dollars for the jail expansion and a new county office building that's now under construction.

But the ten million dedicated to the jail work is proving to be too little.
